- Mix up your epoxy and reduce it 50% with 870 reducer ans spray two light coats before paint. Tip for you - sanding the DP epoxy primer can be a problem as it tries to ball up a little on your sand paper. If you need to scuff over any dirt balls, runs etc prior to painting use some wax and grease remover instead of water to wet sand with.

Bondo, or whatever else you use, should never be more than 1/8" thick. So at that thickness, it doesn't matter if you put it over primer or bare metal. Always prime over Bondo because the polyester will swell and bleed through the final paint unless you seal it down. - If there is rust left on the metal and you paint over it, then go with the filler over the paint. The best way to do it (from what I have seen) is to go down to metal, clean / remove all rust, put metal prep (acid) on metal, add filler, paint with best primer you can (epoxy), then paint. No, you must use a primer that will work with either oil or latex based paints. Some primers dry within two hours and you can begin painting. However, everything has always required 2 coats of primer. If painting over an oil based paint such as in a bathroom ask a pro for help tips. If you have clean (blasted) metal, you can/should spray epoxy primer over the metal. There is no need for etch BUT wipe/ prep the metal as described by the paint manufacturer (you can wipe with lacquer thinner, but carefully/thoroughly wipe off the thinner residue with a good quality (and recommended brand) of wax and grease remover. From the sound of it, depending on how many individual holes you would have a choice between patching several individual holes or just cut out a piece encompassing all the holes, make a patch panel with the appropriate embossing, through holes and cage nuts if any are within the patch panel area, then weld away. So you've got the Primer Surfacer on there. You've got it blocked out it, looks good, but you find that there's a low there. You can put glaze putty on there like Metal Glaze. There's a lot of different brands but the glaze is designed to go over 2K Cure Primer if it's dried. But there is something you wanna do. Primers are great because they highlight imperfections and help you see where you need to spend your efforts. My favorite is Rust-oleum brand “Primer 2 in 1 Filler Sandable”. It’s best to apply some type of primer over the Bondo, as well as the rest of the piece to create an even paint finish. I personally love to use this (affiliate link) shellac. If it isn’t super smooth with the wood that surrounds the Bondo, you will see an outline of where the Bondo is. So just make sure it is super smooth with the surface.
